Alumni Travel

The Hiram alumni travel program provides opportunities for alumni and friends to cultivate their passion for learning through travel. All of our trips are designed and led by someone with a Hiram connection - alumni, friends, or faculty members who are committed to providing you an intimate experience just as you had when you were a student. And what better way to travel than with a group of people with a Hiram connection!

China: Tradition and Change

April 18 – May 8, 2018

China has emerged from centuries of isolation, and it is changing at a rapid pace. Now is the time to visit and experience this country, which is still an enigma to most Americans. Watching hutongs (traditional narrow streets) disappear, observing construction 24 hours a day, talking with the Chinese about how their own lives have been altered and experiencing the stark contrast between ancient and modern, cannot be replicated in a classroom.

By interacting with Chinese students at local schools, visiting historical landmarks like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and Terracotta Army, touring Chinese companies and spending time in the major cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Xi’an, examine the impact of historical legacies and transformational change on China and its people. Coursework will explore the forces driving and resisting change in China today.

The Itinerary
Over the course of three weeks, explore and study in four major Chinese cities.

Beijing
During the five days spent in China’s capital, experience Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City, Olympic sites, the Great Wall, and Summer Palace. Through these visits, you will gain firsthand insight into Chinese politics, arts and history.

Xi’an
From Beijing, travel via overnight train to Xi’an, the starting point of the Silk Road, and one of China’s oldest cities. During the two days spent here, experience the enormous City Wall, Drum Tower, Bell Tower, the Muslim District and Terracotta Army.

Hangzhou
After arriving via plane from Xi’an, spend a week gaining insight into daily Chinese life in Hangzhou. Observe everyday communication, work and home life and the day-to-day impact of ongoing change by staying with a host family and visiting a high school and a college. The stay also includes a day trip to Xitang, an ancient water town.
