Ken '96 & Hillery '96 (Bullard) Nelson's son Hayden

Posted By Duane Verner, Monday, November 3, 2008
Hillery '96 (Bullard) & Ken Nelson's (96) son Hayden was diagnosed with a very rare disease called HLH a few days after his 6th birthday. He has spent the last 40 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors continue to try and treat Hayden's disease and the host of infections that have developed as a result of a weakened immune system.

Friends of Hillery and Ken have formed a website for Hayden, to keep friends and family updated on his condition. Here is the link: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/haydennelson.

We have also formed a fund raising organization, "Hayden's Lil Helpers", to raise funds and help defray some of the hospital expenses being incurred. If you are interested in Donating to Hayden's fund, you can do so by clicking the Paypal link (also found through the Link tab in the caringbridge web site):

If you would rather mail a donation, it can be mailed to:
Key Bank

32000 Walker Road
Avon Lake, OH 44012
Make checks payable to: Hayden's Lil' Helpers

Many of you went to Hiram College with Hillery and Ken, if you could forward this email to other friends I may have missed, I would appreciate it.

There are two fundraising events taking place soon, one in Avon Lake (at The Huddle on Nov. 14th) and a Spaghetti Dinner in North Ridgeville (Nov 8th 4-9pm) at the American Legion. I will send a separate email with details for both of these events.

Biology update

Posted By Lawrence E. Hurd, Friday, September 26, 2008

I have stepped down from being Head of Biology at Washington & Lee

University for the past 15 years, and was awarded an endowed chair, the

John T. Herwick, M.D. Professor of Biology. I have begun a research

collaboration with scientists in Brazil to study the interaction between

human settlements along the Amazon and biological diversity in the

adjacent river and forest ecosystems. This means that I have had to

work hard at learning Portuguese, which would amuse my German and

Spanish professors back at Hiram. I am Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of

the Entomological Society of America. I have no plans to retire in the

near future.

Out of the USAF, into the civlian world I go!

Posted By Pierre-Alain L. Dauby, Thursday, September 25, 2008

After a fantastic 12 year career in the USAF that allowed me to go to medical school and work in various parts of Europe (Norway, England, Germany, Turkey) , fly an F-15 and assist NASA shuttle launch, I have now entered the civilian world!   I just moved to beautiful Northern Virginia where I joined a busy adult/pediatric allergy/asthma practice and hope to settle down for good with my beautiful  wife and 4 children.   I've also started an educational website for allergy disorders (asthma, food allergies, environmental allergies....) at www.allergyexpert.us

What's happening chez Bendik Keymer in 2008

Posted By David K. Keymer, Monday, September 8, 2008
Jan.-May: Filled in as an asst. vice chancellor at the local University of California (in Merced). July: Son Jeremy moved back to States from Sharjah (next door to Dubai) in the UAE, where he was teaching philosophy at the American Univ. of Sharjah. He is now teaching at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY, so we will be visiting the East frequently in the future. Aug.-Sept.: Visited Jeremy in his new home, an 80+ year old house --sunny, big, lots of work to do-- in Syracuse. A short trip to NYC gave me time to visit my favorite bookstore, the Strand ('18 Miles of Books'). Weight restriction limited my book buying to 10. Sept.: Will be attending the class of '60 annual reunion at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, WV. Nora Sue Allen Cronin, who organizes these events, deserves a special medal of honor. It looks like my college quartet, the Hi-Blenders, will reunite for the 1st time in 50 years --John Coldiron, tenor; me, lead; Kirby Miller, baritone; Hooty Sturdy, bass. Nov.: Appearing in Friedrich Durrenmatt's play, The Physicists. I play a mad man who says he's Isaac Newton (I wear a late 17th-century long wig) but really thinks he's Albert Einstein but actually is a spy for the West who is spying on an another madman who has come up with a revolutionary formula for atomic energy. Lunt and Fontaine appeared in the play when it opened on Broadway in 1961. Feb. 09: I'm slated to play Lear in a production of King Lear. This will be my 2d S'speare role and the 2d great role in S'speare for older men. I'm psyched!
