Beloved Professor Gone

Posted By Christine E. Borkan (Edwards), Thursday, September 23, 2010
Updated: Thursday, September 23, 2010

Yesterday in New York, Hiram lost one of its most beloved profs.  John Strassburger was a professor of history here at Hiram College in the 1970's and 1980's, bringing to us a love of architecture and helping to create the Regional studies program.  Many of us students went on to pursue careers in preservation, architectural history, and history because of him.  His dedication to the field of higher education continued at the National Endowment for the Humanities, Knox College, and Ursinus College near Philadelphia, from whence John retired this past spring.  Well known for his bow ties and engaging grin, he will be greatly missed!

Memorial service:  Sunday, 9/26/10 at Bomberger Hall on the Ursinus campus, with a reception to follow at the Berman Museum, also on campus.

Knights of the Golden Horeshoes?

Posted By Marian S. Keegan RF, Monday, September 28, 2009
Marian Keegan, class of 1977.  I was appointed to the Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment Alumni Council and attended a council meeting to facilitate alumni interaction with the school and students.  It was homecoming weekend at Duke and I attended lectures, work sessions, receptions and parties.  Unfortunately, I missed the football game.  The travel route - US Route 15 between Durham, NC and Harrisburg, PA - is a very interesting trip across the landscape and over an historical route.  The historical markers along the road offered short stories about the events and people who traveled and settled along the way.  For example, one spot in Virginia noted that the Knights of the Golden Horseshoes camped nearby on their way to a western expedition.  Who were the Knights of the Golden Horseshoes?
