Join the James A. Garfield Historical Society and the James A. Garfield School District as guests to the upcoming dedication of a Historical Marker to be erected at the former Garrettsville train depot.  A grant was secured through the Ohio Historical Society to memorialize the site of the "last great train heist in American history" on November 7th, 1935.

Research for this grant began as Julie Thompson's (class of 2013) senior capstone for her major in History.  Her research topic was recognized by the Council on Undergraduate Research in Washington, D.C. and was one of the projects chosen to be presented to congressional leaders in the district.

This event will also celebrate the securing of a $5 million grant given to the James A. Garfield Local School District to enhance teaching and learning as well as fund construction of an addition to the current elementary school.

Julie will provide a documentary on "Public Enemy Number One," Alvin "Creepy" Karpis as he recalls his account of the arrest and events surrounding the train heist.

Congressman David Joyce (14th District State Representative), Kathleen Chandler (Portage County Commissioner), Ted Lysiak (School District Superintendent), and Kit Semplak (Chair of the Historical Society) will be on hand to celebrate these milestones and invite members of the local communities to participate.
