Spend ten days in western England experiencing some of the most beautiful countryside in Europe. With your guide, Paul Gaffney, Hiram College Professor of English, you will visit places associated with famous English authors including William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth and Jane Austen.
Along with visiting gardens, castles and other cultural sites,
meet local people, read the literature of the areas and learn more about
all of it. You will stay in interesting hotels (including a Victorian castle)
and enjoy excellent local food and drink.
ABOUT YOUR HOST
Paul Gaffney has been a professor at Hiram College since 2006.
He teaches and researches about British literature, particularly medieval
and Shakespearean. Among his further interests are
architecture, landscape, linguistics, and history.
He has visited England many times, beginning in 1992 and
including three-week Hiram courses in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
Paul maintains a life-long interest in Great Britain that has led him
to become very familiar with the land and its culture.
He always loves to share his knowledge and experience,
even as he enjoys learning new things through travel.
There are two options for lodging.
The Superior Hotel Package generally will provide three- to four-star
accommodations while the Budget Package generally will provide
two- to three-star accommodations. We will never be lodged very far apart.
The base trip price covers all breakfasts, dinners and entrance fees.
Lunches are not included in the cost so participants are encouraged to
bring pocket money for those meals, any souvenirs and other incidentals.
Several flights depart from Cleveland Hopkins Airport late afternoon on
Friday, May 20th, and arrive early the next morning in London, England.
Attendees are responsible for making their own flight arrangements,
so please find the option that best suits your needs.
We will meet up at the Heathrow Airport on Saturday morning to begin our
journey together and take the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station in London.
The price for the Superior Hotel Package is $3,350 per person.
The Budget Hotel Package is $2,800 per person.
A $1,000 deposit is due by December 1, 2015
(or can be paid online during registration)
with the balance due in full by March 1, 2016.
There are also optional add-on activities in Bath and Stratford-Upon-Avon such as opportunities to tour Shakespeare's homes, see a live production (or two) by the Royal Shakespeare Company, enjoy a Deluxe High Tea at the Royal Crescent Hotel, or relax at the Thermae Bath Spa Hot Springs.
