William Hollinger '43

While a student at Hiram College, Bill Hollinger's leadership qualities went beyond the playing field.  He was President of the student body, Phi Gamma Epsilon, and the Men's Committee.  He was also a member of the Black Key and Business Manager of the Spider Web.

Later as "Coach," Bill dedicated 39 years of his life to coaching - seven years at Ripon College in Wisconsin and the last 32 at Hiram College.  As Director of Athletics and Head Coach for basketball, track and football, he guided the Terriers to four straight trips to the NCAA Division II basketball tournament, as well as four PAC titles.

With "Holly" as head of the Athletic Department, Hiram built one of the first all-weather tracks in Ohio and completed construction of a field house equipped to meet the increasing needs of women's sports.

Coach Hollinger has received numerous awards of which include:
  • Four Basketball P.A.C. Coach of the Year Awards
  • P.A.C. Track Coaches Awards
  • five N.C.A.A. Basketball Tournament Awards
  • O.A.C. Distinguished Service Award
  • Hiram College Distinguished Service Award
  • Cleveland Cavs Award
  • S.M.A.C.O. Award for 300 basketball wins
  • Hiram College Athletic Hall of Fame (1980)
  • Red Cross Award for 30 years volunteer service
  • Garfield Society- Charter Member
  • Twelve Gallon Red Gross Donor Award
  • not to mention the "William H. Hollinger" Basketball Court named in his honor

His memberships include Ohio House of Representatives Proclamation on Retirement, Church Elder, Basketball Coaches Association, and National Athletic Director's Association.
