Melissa Haswell '80

Melissa Haswell '80 is the joint-recipient of the first Annual Recent Graduate Service to Humanity Award for her joint work in human parasite ecology in India and Thailand.  The criteria for this award includes having graduated within the last 15 years.  The award recognizes a person who has chosen to serve others, regardless of financial reward, or to engage in advancing knowledge.  The person's efforts demonstrate positive influences in areas which promote volunteerism, community service, philanthropy, teaching, research, social service, ministry, ecology, or world understanding.

At the time Missy was presented this award, she was currently a Research Fellow, Adjunct Lecturer, and a Visiting Scientist on the Faculty of Medicine at the Khon Kaen University in Thailand.  She is an Immunologist and Epidemiologist.  She was involved with the Tropical Health Program, jointly sponsored by the University of Queensland and Queensland Institute of Medical Research of Australia.  Through this program, Missy is teaching natives of uncivilized areas in Thailand, how to discover, diagnose and solve life-threatening diseases such as malaria, hook worm or blood flukes in human beings.
