|G. Russell Goldner '60|
As a minister, Rev. Russ Goldner faithfully read the GOOD BOOK. As president of the Friends of the Library, the Reverend Russ Goldner faithfully recruited new members and funds so others could read the GREAT BOOKS.
Russ Goldner, Class of 1960, majored in sociology and philosophy at Hiram. In his senior year, he was voted the Outstanding Man of the Year. He received his divinity degree from Yale University in 1963 and his doctorate of ministry from the Ohio Consortium of Seminaries in 1977.
Serving God and others…and Hiram College…is a way of life for the Goldner family. Russ's grandfather was a minister who graduated from Hiram in 1896. His father, Hiram Class of 1932, was also a minister. Both his uncle and aunt were Hiram graduates, Classes of 1929 and 1931 respectively. Serving Hiram, therefore, is part of Russ's proud family legacy.
Russ served as senior pastor of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ravenna for 11 years until his recent retirement. Russ's community activities in Portage County are many -- ranging from chairman of the Portage County Pastoral Care Service for Robinson Memorial Hospital, to co-chair of the Portage County Mental Health Levy Committee, to chair of the Christian Churches in Ohio Reconciliation Committee on Racism and Poverty -- as well as host of community groups ranging from the YMCA to Kiwanis.
Russ Goldner served on the College's Alumni Executive Board from 1992 to 1995 and as president of the Friends of the Library for two years. This volunteer assignment found Russ on the campus at least once a month attending meetings, personally signing letters soliciting funds for the library, and providing personal guidance and financial support for the new library. In his family's name, Russ established an endowment to benefit the humanities portion of the collection.
Russ continues to merit the distinction he earned in his senior year some 40 years ago as Outstanding Man of the Year. The Class of 1960 relies on him to help coordinate class reunions…and to run in the Alumni Weekend Hiram Hustle representing "seniors" over the age of 50!
Hiram College salutes Russ Goldner as an alumnus willing to say YES to service in his community, church and college. He has earned this award each year for many years. He is now officially recognized for his good work and good deeds as the 2001 Volunteer of the Year Award.
