|Phil '47 and Norma (Collins) Jones '49|
Norma (Collins) Jones, Class of 1949, and James Philip Jones, Class of 1947, are a devoted team, not only to each other as husband and wife, but also to their alma mater. It would be fair to say that when it comes to volunteering, keeping up with the Joneses is a daunting task.
Norma is known in her adopted community of Carefree, Arizona as the book sale lady. For more than a decade, it is she who has chaired the library book sale for the Desert Foothills Library, raising not only thousands of dollars for the library but also harnessing and overseeing hundreds of volunteer hours to make this event increasingly more successful each year. When not organizing books, Norma enjoys the arts as a member if the Arts Committee of Desert Foothills.
Whether living at their farm in Mantua, Ohio or enjoying the beauty of the Arizona desert, Norma's heart is never far from Hiram College. Almost from the day she graduated, Norma has been one of the stalwarts in her class, actively participating in class reunions and encouraging others to join her on campus. When Bowler Hall needed a steady hand to serve on the fundraising committee, Norma said yes. When the tennis court project needed a boost, Norma and Phil stepped forward to offer a challenge to encourage others to give.
When there is work to be done, Norma is there in full force with her energy, her time, and her good counsel.
Her partner in life, Judge J. Philip Jones, is no less devoted to Hiram. He was president of the Alumni Council in the mid-50s, chaired the annual alumni fund drive in the mid-70s, then served as a member of the Hiram College Board of Trustees from 1978-1984. A trusted member of the legal community, Phil has lent his considerable understanding of probate law to the College's development efforts as a member of the Planned Giving Committee. Phil, too, is always willing to come forward to assist with alumni activities whether as host for an alumni event or a class reunion.
In addition to Hiram College, Phil's other volunteer affiliations have ranged from serving on the planning and zoning commission for Carefree, Arizona to working on the United Way to serving as a trustee for the library in Ravenna, Ohio.
Phil and Norma Jones are that rare combination or doer, giver, and achiever. When they believe in a project, it has their full commitment of time and where and when appropriate, their generous financial backing.
Hiram is proud to salute two individuals who are each worthy of being recognized as the Hiram College Volunteer of the Year, and who together have made teamwork and philanthropy a hallmark of their marriage.
