Professors Xinlu Yu and Gail Ambuske
May 8th - 20th, 2013

No longer the "Sleeping Dragon," China is emerging from centuries of isolation. Even with 5,000 years of history, a revolution sending reverberations throughout the world, an economy continuing to expand at over 8% a year, and the site of the 2008 Olympic Games, China remains for most Americans a giant enigma.

Join Professors Gail Ambuske and Xinlu Yu in an unforgettable journey as we explore the triumph and turmoil that has characterized China's entry into the modern world. Click this LINK to view the complete itinerary.

Hiram College Women's Council

The Women's Council for Hiram College was commissioned in 1940 and has "promoted the interests" of Hiram College ever since.  This past year the Women's Council was able to provide over $15,000 in scholarships in addition to funding special projects.  The Women's Council is open to alumni and friends interested in Hiram College.  If you are interested in joining the Women's Council, they would be happy to add you to their roster of members.

Every year the Women's Council for Hiram College presents their Encore! series, one of their major fundraisers for all the wonderful gifts they make to Hiram College.  Please take a minute to look at this year's Encore! brochure (click HERE) to see if it is something that might interest you.  The last performance of the series on May 4, 2013 is of special interest to Hiram College.  Debra Connor comes to portray Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a woman surgeon during the Civil War.  According to records housed in the Archives of the Hiram College Library, Dr. Walker came to Hiram Village during the War to care for Daniel W. Buckingham (1838-1863) who was wounded in the battle of Gettysburg.  Even though Daniel only lived a few weeks, she stayed on as an honored guest for several months at the Buckingham House right here on campus.

If you have any questions about the Encore! series or would like more information on how to become a member of the Women's Council, please contact Vi McCarty in the Development and Alumni Relations Office at 330.569.5276 or 800.705.5050.
